Unlike the more theatrical cabaret-style performances you may have seen on tv and movies, this workshop will demonstrate the beauty of classical bellydance. This class will teach you to engage and strengthen your core, pelvis and hips, while promoting flexibility and range of motion. We will cover both the fluid and percussive fundamentals of the art, through isolating different parts of the body and will practice putting them together to music. Those new to bellydance will learn to access flexibility, strength, and power through the basic movements of bellydance, building confidence through a new form of expression.
Jennifer Zacharia completed early formal training in ballet, jazz, and hip-hop, and later engaged in a more self-directed study of salsa and raqs sharqi (aka bellydancing). Chiefly inspired by the styles of the legendary Tahia Carioca and Suad Husni - i.e., the most prominent dancers from the golden age of Egyptian cinema - Jennifer views bellydancing as a refined art form that is accessible to all ages and skill levels. Most recently offering classes to private clients in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jennifer is excited to share her knowledge and enjoyment of bellydancing with the broader Columbia dance and yoga community at Yoga Masala.
